Why has our University chosen to take part to this project?

The natural stone processing sector is characterized by a high environmental impact, and represents an important economic resource for the entire Friuli Venezia Giulia region, which features a wide variety of quarrying and mineral treating companies that process different types of natural stone and are subjected to different legal constraints. The University of Udine entered the CLEANSTONE project with the ambitious objective of turning the stone sector into a modern, competitive and knowledge-based industry with reduced environmental footprint. This objective will be pursued by exploiting different, yet complementary, types of know how: theoretical approaches, through which each step of the technological process can be modeled; state-of-the-art computational techniques, through which the environmental impact of the process can be assessed; experimental measurements, through which theoretical and numerical predictions can be connected to the specific characteristics of the processed stone.
